Halloween Cooking:
Mini Jack-o-Lantern Fruit Bowl

Recipes for Kids - Halloween Baking Recipes - Mother and Daughter Matching Outfits

This year I decided to get into the halloween spirit a little more, but in our own way. I am trying to be mindful of not buying decorations that will only be used for a few days before they are discarded into the rubbish, encouraging companies to keep making throw away items and being detrimental to our environment.

That includes buying any dress ups and also any styling items that we used to shoot this content. We used only things we could use again or eat!

Also I wanted to make these recipes as easy and as healthy as possible. I don't mind Maeve having treats but I want them to not have loads of butter, refined sugars and other nasties.

This is the first of our Halloween recipes and while there is no actual cooking involved is a a super simple recipe for kids that I hope you enjoy!

Sensory Experience

We are a boutique fashion label creating mum and daughter matching outfits, and we want to show you how baking with kids, and also cooking with kids can be fun and a great sensory experience for them.

Recipes for kids we think are perfect if they can get involved and touch, feel and smell the ingredients.

If your little ones are small you can give them some off cuts of the orange and other fruit to play with, and even let them touch the yoghurt (if they don't mind the feel and mess!). If they are old you can let them cut the softer fruits up with a child friendly knife.

Maeve loved watching the whole experience and seeing the orange transform into a pumpkin face,. She nibbled at the off cuts of fruit along the way and stuffed her own pumpkin at the end.

Easy recipes for kids are the ones I keep going to again and again, and this isn't limited to just halloween! You can get creative with the orange and turn it into many other things!

Cooking with Kids Cooking with Toddlers

- Let them feel each ingredient separately and explain what each one is
- Let them help scoop out the orange, and see how orange juice is created
- Let them see how the orange is taken apart, and then put back together even topped with the lid on top. It's a great learning and developmental activity as it starts to show creativity and spark their imagination.

General Rules:
- Always have something on hand for them to play with. It will save lots of mess and frustration. E.g. measuring spoons, measuring jugs.
- I measure my ingredients before hand. I find Maeve enjoys the mixing parts most and gets bored (and therefore destructive) if she isn't getting involved.
- Please always take care when your kids are in the kitchen. We are only providing advice from a mum's point of view and you should never leave children around sharp objects or unattended.

Recipe Cooking with Kids Cooking with Toddlers

INGREDIENTS
- Oranges
- Chopped fruit of your choice. We added bananas, grapes, raspberries and dried apricots
- A dollop of yoghurt
- Anything else you want to add on top - dried fruit, crushed nuts, honey etc.

METHOD
1. Give the oranges a good clean
2. Slice the top of the orange off (this can be kept to use as a lid)
3. Using a spoon scoop out the orange. (Don't waste all of this goodness, you can chop it up to put back inside or even squeeze it and have it as a juice on the side!!)
4. Using a paring knife carefully cut out the eyes, nose and mouth (TIP: start small because it can be tricky to work with such small incisions)
5. Fill the now orange jack-0-lantern up with your chopped fruit and top with a dollop of yoghurt (the yoghurt and fruit juices can leak through the face you've made, so be prepared with a bib and a wipeable surface).
