Things to do with Kids London:
Discover Children's Story Centre Review

things to do with kids london | with kids in london | kids activities london

We visited Discover Children's Story Centre only a few days after it reopened its doors post lockdown. I'd taken Maeve a few times before when she was just 1, so I was interested to see how she would enjoy it at this age, as well as how it would be different this time round. We went with a friend who also had a 2 year old and here is everything you need to know!!!
Things to do with kids London

The Basics

WHERE IS IT?: . It's in East London, Stratford.
Full address: 383-387 High Street, Stratford, London E15 4Q

HOW TO GET THERE: It's a 2 minute walk from Stratford High Street Station. A 5 minute walk from the main TFL Stratford stations and a 10 min walk from Westfield shopping centre.
DRIVING:
1. If you're lucky and early enough there's around 5 parking spots on Bridge road which is a 30 second walk to the venue. It's pay by phone and a maximum of 2 hours.
2. A 5 minute walk away is Stratford multi-storey car park - You can find this car park off Great Eastern Road, Stratford, E15 1BB, where 'Service route 1' is shown.
3. Otherwise if you fancy a shop while you're little one is napping you can park at Westfield and just walk down.

WHEN CAN YOU VISIT?: At the moment it's pre-booked tickets only and I know they are selling very fast. They are currently open Monday - Friday 10am to 5pm.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?*:
Children under 1 - free
1 year olds - £2
2 year olds+ - £6.50
Adults - £6.50
Carer, age 65, disabled adult/ child - £5.50
ADDITIONAL:
Fairy Tales - £2 per person (I highly recommend booking this!)

FROM WHAT AGE?: We visited as soon as the girls could walk, at around 1. They really enjoyed it at that age (I would 100% recommend trying to get into the Fairy Tale Town as this is the best for ages 1). It was even better at aged 2 and I can imagine as they get older they will love it a little bit more every time.
We recommend from ages 1+ and are walking on their own to get maximum fun from it.

How it works

You get a 2 hour slot to explore the Storyland. It's essentially 5 areas which are:
BASEMENT FLOOR: Where their themed space is. It is currently fairy tale town is (additional tickets required at £2 each, exhibiting until 31 Oct 2020) but we think is a must if you go. The last time we went it was  The Tiger Who Came to Tea.
GROUND FLOOR: Magical story world level 1  - think immersive, exploratory play spaces & under the sea,
GARDEN: Ships, climbing  frames, musical wooden features and slides. There's tables outside so if bring your  own lunch you can eat it while enjoying some fresh  air.
FIRST FLOOR: Magical story world level 2. Huge clouds,  space ships, large bookcases and a giant slide.
SECOND FLOOR: Cafe. This was closed when we went, so we  recommend checking before you go or making sure  you  bring your own  food and snacks.

Where to start? We had our 30 min slot in the basement at 10am, then worked our way from top to bottom (first floor, ground, garden) and finished with lunch in the garden.

*There's toilets and baby changing areas on each floor. They've been thoughtful with space and making toilet trips very easy.

Fairy Tale Town

You need to book this in addition to your entry ticket - which is an extra £2. This is easily our FAVOURITE PLACE in the whole venue and we would only come if we could book this. There are only a couple of entry times to this per day and you only get 30 minutes inside.
There's so much imaginative play here and their creativity runs wild. So much thought has gone into this, and each little cove and area is truly incredible. Only negative is we wished we could have stayed in here longer.

Magic Storyworld Level 1

This is a lovely open space with lots of space for your little one to run around.  Think under the  sea mixed with a magical underworld. There's a couple of places you can sit down under trees and do some arts and crafts as well as a little cave with some dancing lights.

Garden

A lovely outdoor play area with loads of little climbing things to explore. Bigger than it looks you could spend a good deal of time just here. We brought a packed lunch for the girls and they ate their lunch on some high chairs at a table outside.

First Floor - Magic Storyworld Level 1

Think almost Harry Potter style magic, combined with some space creativity. This is a really nice area with lots of space for kids to run around. Aimed at the slightly older kids it was loads of fun, but we didn't spend a lot of time here.

PPE & Safety

We came prepared with hand sanitiser and masks as we were unsure how everything would be managed on the day. However they had really good stations set up with soap & taps, hand sanitiser and disinfectant wipes. Was very impressed.

We questioned the staff about what they did with all the toys and books, and how they were able to get these cleaned between sessions (especially with the Fairy Tale Town). Here is what they said:
- They have 6 of every toy in Fairy Tale Town and after each session they remove everything and it gets replaced by new clean props. At the end of each day they deep clean all the toys.
- Between each session everything gets wiped down throughly and they also have air purifiers.
- Masks are not required to be worn, but because they had limited the amount of people within the venue we felt safe not wearing them. It may be harder to get into places but I do enjoy that they are quieter and not as hectic.

Our Verdict...

We all absolutely loved it!! Even though it was only a 2 hour slot, at this age it's plenty of time for 2 year olds. Lots of things for them to do and they were entertained and busy the entire session. It was a real struggle to get them to leave at the end of it and Maeve keeps asking to go back.

It's one of those places that you can take your child alone, or meet up with other people.

I’ve been wanting to go here for a long time but wasn’t sure how I would feel about going somewhere indoors and how they would maintain hygiene. Thanksss so much I feel a lot better about booking now. Maria xo
