Best toys for a 2 year old -
24 extraordinary ideas from a mum

TThis age is so much fun to buy for because they are really starting to enjoy everything life has to offer and their personalities are really starting to show.

A 2 year old present should as much fun for the child as it is for the person giving the gift watching their face as they open the wrapping paper.

We live in a fairly small flat so when I was looking at presents for Maeve, I really wanted to make sure that what we gave her would be something that lasted more than just a couple of weeks.

Space comes at a premium, so if it wasn’t something that I knew would grow with her then I didn’t want it in the house. Also, when people were asking me for ideas I wanted to make sure their money was well spent and that when they would come over that they would see her playing with their gifts. It’s all about the gift of giving right??

Along with her birthday and Christmas has come all the 2 year old birthday parties that we have been to, So these 25 things aren’t just things we have bought for her, but a combination of what she has received and what we have bought for other 2 year olds.

I think the best toys for 2 year olds promote imaginative play, creativity and are things that can grow with the child. What I mean by that is that over time they can discover new features or new way to use them that will excite them and have them wanting to reach for it again and again.

I’ve ordered them simply from lowest to highest price so that there’s something from stocking filler to larger purchases.

We DO NOT make any commission or make money from your purchases, these are real honest recommendations from us, to you.

Our top 25 best toys for 2 year olds (from lowest to highest price)

Best toys for a 2 year old - Galt Toys Funny Faces Sticker Book

Galt Toys Funny Faces Sticker Book

1. Sticker book

Trust me, I have gone through a serious amount of sticker books in Maeve’s first 2.5 years on this Earth. The trick is finding a reusable sticker book that has an interactive element to it. This is why we are recommending the Galt Sticker Books, in particular the funny faces one. Bought for her as a present we have used this time and time again, and it never seems to get old. This birthday present for a 2 year old is great to take out to dinners when you want to entertain them but create no mess. Very handy also for flights or car journeys. Although they are reusable, they are still stickers so can be torn and lose their stickiness after a lot of use. Great value for money though and they have an extensive range so you can keep adding to their collections.

We love: Galt Toys Funny Faces Sticker Book - £3.57 from Amazon

best toys for a 2 year old - DUPLO My First Number Train

DUPLO My First Number Train

2. Lego

To be honest Maeve hasn’t been the biggest Lego fan but she loves this train that was bought for her by her grandmother. While she won’t play with regular Lego that doesn’t have a purpose for being built, she loves making this train and also loves the 3 little characters that come along with it. We keep it in one of the cotton bags that are included with the purchase of our products, so that she can keep all the pieces together at home and also makes it easy to pop it in a bag if we are going out somewhere.

This birthday present for a 2 year old is great for fine motor skills, has numbers on the sides for teaching them to count and also helping them to learn colours. Things that make this gift something that they can develop with as they learn each element as they get older. At 2.5 we talk through the numbers and she groups all the colours together.

We love: DUPLO My First Number Train - £9.75 from Amazon

best toys for a 2 year old - Ikea MÅLA Easel

Ikea MÅLA Easel

3. Easel

From 2 years old I really found that Maeve was taking an interest in craft activities like drawing and painting. Our friend bought us this easel because it’s compact and also there are really 3 different boards on the easel. 1) paint 2) chalkboard 3) whiteboard. The paper rolls are very substantial and also refillable. It’s been great for Maeve to start painting pictures for people in our family and also wipes clean easily so creates little mess (as long as they are keeping in the vicinity of the easel).

We love: Ikea MÅLA Easel - £18 from Ikea

best toys for a 2 year old - Elsa Frozen Dress

Elsa Frozen Dress

4. Dressing up outfit

This has been one of the most fun things that Maeve started to do around this age and what better birthday present for a 2 year old! The options are limitless as they start to discover new movies and shows but we’ve started off with 3 outfits and I can just see this collection growing. We are recommending a dress that my best friend bought for her as the quality is lovely and Maeve really loves it. It’s surprisingly soft and the skirt part has great volume. It’s machine washable, true to size however is quite long and Maeve has to pick it up to walk around (she’s currently 2.5 wearing a size 2).

We did add on a little badge just to help her associate the dress with Elsa but it’s not necessary. Since we have added an Anna and Tangled dress to her wardrobe – and we are lucky if we get her out of the house in anything else these days.

We love: Elsa Frozen Dress - £18.99 from Amazon

best toys for a 2 year old - TOMY Toomies Foam Cone Factory Baby Bath Toy

TOMY Toomies Foam Cone Factory Baby Bath Toy

5. Ice Cream Maker Bath Toy

While Maeve has always loved bath times, I feel there has been a lack of imaginative play bath toys available to get her as she grows. Sure, there’s the standard ducks and boats but nothing that she can role play with. I found this great ice cream maker when she was about 18 months old and it’s still got a place on our wall over a year later. She now tells me what flavours are available, how much they cost and asks for my feedback. It’s been great watching her imagination expand with this toy.

We love: TOMY Toomies Foam Cone Factory Baby Bath Toy - £19.99 from Amazon

best toys for a 2 year old - Kids Concept Doctors Case in Natural

Kids Concept Doctors Case in Natural

6. Doctors Kit

If I had to choose the best toys for 2 year olds this would definitely be in the top 3! Bought as a birthday present by my sister this is a clear favourite of hers. Almost every morning since buying she pulls it out at 6am and either her or I are laying in the floor being seen by the “doctor”. There are plenty available on the market in both plastic and wooden. Maeve loves the heart beat that the stethoscope makes so if that’s something you think they would like then look for that feature.

We love: Kids Concept Doctors Case in Natural - £23.95 from Scandiborn

best toys for a 2 year old - Little Dutch Cash Register & Scanner

Little Dutch Cash Register & Scanner

7. Cash Register

Maeve just loves anything to do with cooking and shopping and it’s been fun to add this to her play time. We also have a little shopping basket so do the whole role play from buying food, scanning them, paying for them and then saying “have a nice day”. There are plenty available on the market in wooden and plastic, with things added like credit card scanners and tills that open. Maeve loves opening the till and also using the microphone to voice things over the pretend loudspeaker “clean up in the milk aisle”!!

We love: Little Dutch Cash Register & Scanner - £24.95 from Scandiborn

best toys for a 2 year old - Sylvanian Families - Baby Castle Nursery

Sylvanian Families - Baby Castle Nursery

8. Sylvanian Families

I was born and lived most my life in Australia so although these toys weren’t something I grew up with, Maeve has taken a liking to them. I like that you can buy them in small units and then can build a little collection. Maeve was bought this little set which is great – the slide and swing can be slightly irritating though as they aren’t fixed on and regularly need to be reattached.

We love: Sylvanian Families - Baby Castle Nursery £24.99 from Amazon
(available from other retailers)

best toys for a 2 year old - Kitchen Creations Magical Oven by Play-Doh

Kitchen Creations Magical Oven by Play-Doh

9. Play-Doh

Sure playdoh on it’s own is great, but take it to the next level with this magical oven. I think this deserves a play in the list of best toys for 2 year olds because of the amount of time it entertains Maeve for. There’s lots to do with it including making cakes, pizzas, cinnamon buns as well as all the tiny things you can press (fish, peas, bread etc.). Note that on the Amazon website it says it’s exclusive to Amazon, but it’s not.

We love: Kitchen Creations Magical Oven by Play-Doh - £25 from Amazon
(available from other retailers)

best toys for a 2 year old - Bloomingville Wooden Chopping Food in Crate

Bloomingville Wooden Chopping Food in Crate

10. Chopping Fruit

This is something I wish we bought as an accessory with her toy kitchen. While the normal foods have been great, these cutting ones are fantastic for developing fine motor skills.

We love: Bloomingville Wooden Chopping Food in Crate - £28.00 from The Modern Nursery

best toys for a 2 year old - Plan Toys Cleaning Set

Plan Toys Cleaning Set

11. Cleaning Set

This may be slightly controversial to some people even though it’s a gender-neutral toy, but personally Maeve enjoys cleaning up. This is not something that we have ever forced upon her, but just because she sees us doing it all the time she likes to get involved too. This little wooden set is adorable and is made from rubberwood and organic cotton.

We love: Plan Toys Cleaning Set - £30.00 from The Modern Nursery

best toys for a 2 year old - Liewood Saxo Mini Backpack - Cat Rose

Liewood Saxo Mini Backpack - Cat Rose

12. Mini Backpack

As babies get older the number of things you have to take out with you reduce, and therefore do the sizes of the bags. This Leiwood mini backpack is the perfect size for nappies, spare change of clothes some dummies and snacks. It does come in other colours but we love this rose colour with its contrast lining. It’s made of recycled polyester which is a more sustainable option than a lot that’s on the market.

We love: Liewood Saxo Mini Backpack - Cat Rose - £32.50 from Daisies and Dinosaurs
(available from other retailers)

best toys for a 2 year old - Big steps old Macdonald trailer

Big steps old Macdonald trailer

13. Big steps old Macdonald trailer

This is a great little set that helps teach them farm animals, the noises they make and also great for coordination. Lots of buttons and the tractor moves and plays songs as well. They can play with the animals on their own in the trailer or in the barn. Great from ages 1+ and this set I think is great value and quality for what it is.

We love: Big steps old Macdonald trailer - £34.99 from Smyths Toys
(available from other retailers)

best toys for a 2 year old - Jupiter Workshops Wooden 3 Storey Dolls House

Jupiter Workshops Wooden 3 Storey Dolls House

14. Dolls House
Despite what some people may think, this can be something for both boys and girls. There are so many colours available to choose from and you can fill it with whatever the child likes. No limits to what can create and you can keep adding to the rooms as they get older. We got given this lovely one from Maeve’s aunty and really like it.

We love: Jupiter Workshops Wooden 3 Storey Dolls House - £35.00 from Argos

best toys for a 2 year old - rachel romper

Me & Maeve Grace - Rachel Romper

15. Rachel Romper

While not technically a toy, we couldn’t not include one of the most beautiful rompers ever in this list. Its hand painted print, buttery soft cotton, little frill details and not to mention a matching silk dress available to wear with it. This make the perfect gift to really show you have picked something special. Made ethically by a family factory in Bali this high-quality outfit has been crafted to be loved endlessly. Sent in a 100% cotton bag that’s been ethically made in the EU, it can be handed to siblings or friends time and time again.

best toys for a 2 year old - Liewood Dante Beach Set - Cat rose

Liewood Dante Beach Set - Cat rose

16. Beach Bucket Set

This we think is the best bucket set on the market with it’s cute design and soft 100% BPA free silicone. It’s bendable which makes it non breakable and very compact, as well as being easy to clean. It comes in various colours but we love the cat rose. This bucket set will be taken to all beaches and wild water adventures ahead.

best toys for a 2 year old - Bloomingville Tea Set

Bloomingville Tea Set

17. Tea Set

It is safe to say that from the age of 2, the tea parties begin. Whether it’s with you or their toys this makes this easily makes our list for the best toys for 2 year old. We love this wooden set but if you want to be putting actually liquid into the pot then better opt for a ceramic or plastic one.

We love: Bloomingville Tea Set - £38.95 from Scandiborn

best toys for a 2 year old

(left) Legoland               (right) Peppa Pig World

18. Tickets to...

The 2-year milestone was so much fun as they become much more aware of their surroundings, love animals and get excited about characters and rides. We were constantly looking for things to do with Maeve, so spent a lot of time visiting venues and adventure places. This is one of my favourite gifts to give as most vouchers last a year and the parents will thank you for not just getting any old thing.

Some include - Legoland, Peppa Pig World, Willows Farm, London Zoo, Chessington World of Adventures, Alton Towers (CBeebies Land), Gulliver’s Theme Parks & Resorts and Drayton Manor.

best toys for a 2 year old - Leap Frog Scoop & Learn Ice Cream Cart

Leap Frog Scoop & Learn Ice Cream Cart

20. Ice Cream Cart

This is amazing for role play and creativity and helps them develop their counting and colour skills. There’s so much to do that will keep them entertained and no small parts which is always a plus. It doesn’t come assembled but there’s minimal assembly to do and it is a really decent size. You would want to check in with the parents and make sure they would be happy to receive something this big before buying.

We love: Leap Frog Scoop & Learn Ice Cream Cart - £44.99 from Amazon
(available from other retailers)

best toys for a 2 year old - Kids Concept Portable Kitchen

Kids Concept Portable Kitchen

20. Mini Kitchen

This is a great alternative if they don’t already have a larger toy kitchen or don’t have the space for it (for a much bigger kitchen see item 25). This is a lovely and neat wooden set that can pack down with a handle if it’s to be used outside the home. Comes with some accessories which you can add to if you want to go a little overboard – because hey who doesn’t when you’re buying kids presents??

We love: Kids Concept Portable Kitchen - £56.00 from The Modern Nursery

best toys for a 2 year old - interactive doll

(left) Baby Annabell Zapf Creation Doll       (right)  Baby Alive Baby Lil Sounds

21. Interactive Doll

We unfortunately have somehow ended up with around 6 babies that all do absolutely nothing. I don’t even know where they have come from and I don’t know what to do with them. This interactive doll is something I wish I had found before our collection started because it would entertain Maeve for longer, as well as being able to grow along with her. I know it’s only a matter of time before she isn’t interested in her babies that do nothing. This one babbles, giggles, sleeps, sucks her dummy, wets her nappy and cries real tears. One negative about these dolls is there is no variation in skin or hair colour. Something I am hoping they address. Baby Alive however do an interactive black hair baby doll which is available on amazon – click here.

We love: Baby Annabell Zapf Creation Doll - £56.09 from Amazon
(available from other retailers)

best toys for a 2 year old - Strider 12 Sport

Strider 12 Sport

22. Walking Bike

These bikes are great because they can only go as fast as their legs can push them, so they cant get too far away from you. A balance bike is the ideal introduction and avoids the difficult transition from trainer wheels to two wheels. There are a huge range of bikes on the market to choose from but we have chosen a good quality and tested one. It’s important to get a bike that’s the right size for them, so getting an adjustable bike is really key. This bike is from ages 18 months - 3.5 years and is lightweight. Easily making the list of best toys for 2 year old and beyond!

We love: Strider 12 Sport - £109.99 from Strider Sport

best toys for a 2 year old - Nobodinoz Nevada Teepee - Natural

Nobodinoz Nevada Teepee - Natural

23. Teepee

I first discovered teepees on Pinterest and fell in love! They add another little room in your house for kids to play in and remind me of all the fun that childhood has to offer. Think tea parties, movie nights, play dates and teddy bear picnics. This will be a central point for all the kids that come over to play. I love this one because of the quality, it’s OEKO-Tex certified cotton and FSC certified pine wood and the gold stella print is stunning.

We love: Nobodinoz Nevada Teepee - Natural - £115 from The Modern Nursery
(available from other retailers)

best toys for a 2 year old - Aviles Kitchen Set

Aviles Kitchen Set

24. Toy Kitchen

Saving the best until last, this is probably number 1 in my list of best toys for 2 year old. It is without a doubt the thing that is used most in our house with Maeve and when her friends come over. It’s big enough without being too big and there are plenty of cupboard doors to open. We’ve added contents to it over time to help her develop and learn, and have no doubt it is going to be with us many more years, before then being handed to another family to love. It comes in different colours, but we of course loved pink!
